My 2013 starts in March

It seems a little late to be celebrating the new year in March huh? But it’s never too late to start over.

Have you ever been given a second chance to do something, maybe a second chance to take an exam, to rebuild something that didn’t work out, or to love life..

For me the greatest second chance I have been given was many years ago when I met myself at the Cross.

Let me explain: Have you ever gotten a terrible job at a manicure that you tried to do yourself? (if you are a guy, I’m sure you have heard girls complain about it haha)

What happens when you are trying to do this perfect manicure to yourself, but still have things to do and you don’t want to be late for that special night out…well…your nail polish is likely to get ruined, you might get nail polish outside your nail where it doesn’t belong, or it gets nasty looking clumps, wrinkles etc. There are many ways a bad job on a manicure can turn into. And you look at the clock, it’s still ticking, you still have to put on those fancy heels, get the car keys out of your purse –with nail-polish hazardous materials inside– and finally get to that lovely place. But the only way to get your nails looking as nice as you thought they would when you first bought that new shade of nail polish is by… taking it off… and starting over. If you try to recover the bad job you had initially done it’s just going to get messier, or it will look lame. Yes, plain lame.

So you take heart. Take it all off. Start over and ask your dear friend beside you to help you because you have done this one too many times to know better. You need someone else to do it for you. Then you can both finally adventure into that special evening with ready hands for whatever the night might bring.

Just like that.

So when I realized for the first time of the mess I had inside my heart, all the ugly sin and how offensive it is to God, I tried to cover it up until the clumps were so great I could not undo them. I tried to cover it up with social work from a young age, being an obedient child, good friend etc. No matter how much I tried there was something inside that could not be washed away by ‘doing’ good things. God needed to bring me to the cross, shatter my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh. He covered me with Jesus’ blood, because someone had to pay for the sin I had inside. So instead of trying to ‘do’ anything I just let God give me a clean slate!

Starting over can be very exciting and terrifying at the same time because you have no idea what you may encounter, and you have no control over it. Since God has a hold of my heart it brings comfort and joy, because He is good, just, merciful, loving, Holy, all-powerful etc. What then shall I fear?

I’m just thankful. Thankful beyond measure that He is willing to take a mess and make it beautiful. That’s why I go to Him for second chances everyday! I still mess up, I still get impatient and try to do it on my own. But He is patient enough to offer new and bright beginnings every morning! This 2013 you and I still have many new beginnings left, many new joys, all of this through the same love that never ends and is accessible to all through the cross!

Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
    they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
